I heard a quote from Sen. Lindsey Graham this morn. I don’t have it verbatim, but the upshot of it is: “Do you really think that we must have "talk radio" tell us how to vote?”

Maybe he’s slow, so let’s explain it to him: the plastic box on your nightstand isn’t really talking. It’s picking up signals from broadcasters.

You see, Senator, plastic boxes don’t talk. People talk. We share ideas. And when ideas clash, the good ideas stand and the weak ideas fall by the wayside. Sometimes ideas fall somewhere in between, but when exposed to the fire of interrogation and cross-examination, they get refined and become better ideas. That’s why I love talk radio.

People across the country call in and share their ideas, argue with the hosts and with each other, and people get to hear different ideas they might not otherwise hear. Oftentimes, people abandon bad ideas and adopt good ideas. I know I have, and I am thankful for it.

If you want a monolithic message, there are plenty of countries that would welcome you and your monochromatic ideas—as long as they don’t clash with their government.

Here's another quote from Graham: “…Just shut up…!” A little persnickety, eh, Senator?

I suppose I would be too if I thought I was hearing voices from little plastic boxes telling me things I didn’t want to hear.

The Return of the Age of Danger

The Age of Danger is back.

In the past, humans had many dangers to fear: sickness, war, the elements. How did we get lulled into such an age of relative safety that we do not recognize danger anymore?

When I think about American history, I feel more confident, and believe we’ll survive global Islamic terrorism. We’ve survived great evils before. But when I think about WORLD history, I get very concerned.

World history has seen the Dark Ages, and The Age of Enlightenment; Medieval Times and The Renaissance; empires rise and fall. Can we keep ours from falling?

Will those within our culture who don’t care about it prefer the one that replaces it? How will they withstand a culture that claims to love death more than we love life? Peace marches and antiwar demonstrations get noticed by governments with a conscience, but will it work on tyrants who sacrifice their children?

Good people MUST fight to keep evil from winning.

If you need to ask how to define good and evil? then your battle is already lost.

It’s not the bigotry, stupid

I was a little put off by Lindsay Graham calling me a bigot.

Regarding the desire of most Americans to have our borders enforced, he said “…America should be done with this business; we did it to the Jews, we did it to the Catholics, 'Irish need not apply….'”

Pardon me, SENATOR, but for the record, this is America, where Jews are welcome, Catholics are welcome, Irish are welcome, and Mexicans are welcome, SO LONG AS THEY OBEY OUR LAWS.
 
It may be too late for Sen. Graham to get it, (as he seems a little slow lately) but if you happen to know another moron who thinks that enforcing laws is tantamount to bigotry, please steer them back to the real issue: It’s not the bigotry, stupid. It’s the security of our borders, and the respect for our laws (you know – those things that Senators write).

I kinda miss the drives America used to have during WWII. I wasn't born then, but the enthusiasm to win was so powerful it can still be felt today, in the memorabilia and relics from that generation. That spirit was strong!

So what about today? Do Americans today feel that the US Govt. is so strong they don't need cheerleaders? No Americans (except the most radical fringes) say they want us to lose.

We have the money to win, we have the power to win, but do we have the will to win? How do we get that enthusiasm back?

I woke up at 4am this morning thinking about your son. I read last night an article about his sacrifice and the sacrifices of others like him.

I know there is nothing I can say or write to assuage your grief, but if I may dare approach you, I would like to tell you how grateful I am for your family’s service.

Our enemy believes they can win this war for this reason: they say, “we love death more than you love life.”

They are right about what they love and what we love. But their conclusion is wrong for this reason: we love freedom more than we love life. We love freedom more than they love death. We as Americans have never and will never willingly succumb to the indignity of tyranny or oppression.

Thinking about gold star families of wars past, I realized Americans have always fought and died for freedom: freedom from kings and from slavery; freedom from concentration camps and communism. Today’s struggle is against Global Islamic Terror and religious oppression. This generation’s fight is, once again, for liberty and for freedom.

This may sound strange, but I also envy your son’s courage. Most of us will die just for being old. And when we do, many of us will wonder if we lived for anything. Your son died for others. And for his sacrifice, you will suffer his absence for decades. But as recipients of God’s mercy, how great will your reunion be!

Everyone who receives God’s mercy will be reunited with loved ones. But yours will be extra savory because the absence you suffered is for the great and wonderful cause of freedom. He set aside his own life for others.

There’s a saying that it’s better to die on your feet than to live on your knees. We live free because your son and great men like him died free.

He chose a noble path. If no one chose your son’s path, none of us would be free. Therefore, my gratitude to you and to him is inexpressible.

Solution: Withdrawal?

What can we expect if we withdrawal from Iraq? Didn’t we try that strategy before?

When we withdrew from Vietnam, it gave a young Saudi an idea that came to fruition 25 years later on 9-11.

Our military knows they can win it over there. Can we win it over here?

Why are we in Iraq?

This morning, Dennis Prager interviewed Max Boot, senior fellow of the Council on Foreign Relations in NY.

A caller asked, "why exactly are we in Iraq?"

I thought his answer was interesting.

Paraphrasing:  "originally it was for a different reason, but now its because it’s where Al Qaeda has chosen to confront us. It’s an ideal place for us to confront them because we are killing more of them there than we otherwise could anywhere else."

Vietnam II?

I hear many people comparing our current war in the Gulf to Vietnam, but shouldn’t that cut against those who want us to pull out? What were some of the consequences of leaving Vietnam the way we did?

Perhaps the biggest mistake we made with Vietnam (after going in) was pulling out. When we left, there was a terrible massacre of tens, hundreds of thousands, (millions?) of innocents. Pulling out of Vietnam showed the world that the US could not be counted on as a reliable ally; the US could be bullied and pushed around. It demonstrated that we were afraid to take a hit.

OPEC felt they could raise gas prices to whatever they want to charge. Remember gas lines? And we were powerless to do anything about it.

They could take our ambassadors hostage – what would we do about it? They could bomb our Marine barracks, our embassies, our ships; kidnap our citizens. And leaving Vietnam the way we did gave a young Saudi the idea that America was a paper tiger – looked tough and powerful on the outside, but would chicken out if challenged. Who is the young bin Laden today? Who’s getting ideas about our courage, or lack of it, now? What plots are being formulated by our actions or inactions now that will come to fruition 25 years from now?

They are betting that they can take 300,000 casualties to our 3,000. They don't care about their 300,000, incl. Civilians. But we do care about our 3,000 soldiers, et. al. (I don't see THEIR leaders going on any suicide missions).

I don't want them to be right. Our military can easily win it over there if we don't tie them up with minutia. BUT, can we win it over here?
